Diabetes is like driving: You listen to music, you talk, but your eyes always stay on the windshield so you don’t crash.
My 33-Year Defiance
By Zulfiqar Ali
Diagnosed: July 1992
In 1992, at age 23, my world narrowed down to thirst, trembling legs, and a terrifying loss of balance. When the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes finally came, it felt as though a shadow had fallen over my future.
In an era without the internet or support groups, I was met with medical misdiagnosis and the stinging "pity" of strangers who whispered, "Such a young man, how sad."
I chose silence. I hid my struggle, sharing it only with my family.
The Icebox Years
The struggle was more than medical; it was a battle against poverty. As a student, I had no refrigerator. I would buy 50 rupees of ice every day just to keep my insulin from spoiling in a small box.
That cold box held my life.
My mother’s hand on my shoulder and her whispered prayers were the only things that kept me from breaking when I couldn't afford a single syringe.
A Heart That Saw Beyond My Labels
When marriage was discussed, I was terrified. Who would choose a life tied to insulin?
I told my future wife the truth, expecting her to walk away. She simply smiled and asked: "If I fell ill after marriage, would you leave me?" I said no. She replied, "Then how could I leave you? What is written in destiny will happen."
Her courage gave me the strength to finally live.
The Harvest
Thirty-three years later, the "young boy" once pitied by others is now the proud father of two engineers, an architect, and a daughter in her final year of MBBS.
I embrace an active life at the gym daily and manage my health with a CGM. I have proven that diabetes is like driving a car: you can enjoy the music, but your eyes must never leave the windshield.
My journey continues until I open a zero-profit pharmacy for the elderly who face the same "icebox" challenges I once overcame.
My Message
To the newly diagnosed: You did not choose this, but you can choose how you fight.
The control is in your hands, the courage is from Allah, and your future is written by your own effort.
